Reviewer Comments:
I find I'm truly enjoying Blue Water Comics.
Don't get me wrong, they're not all winners, but they all have such character, even the books I'm less than thrilled with. Blue Water is not afraid to publish anything. And, in a market that seems to produce a lot of same old, same old, it's nice to see a company with a product list that is, literally, all over the place.
Take, for example, Back to Myserious Island. Ok, it's from the Ray Harryhausen signature series, and is inspired by Harryhausen version of Captain Nemo. So, it's got that gong for it.
The art was hard for me to get past. I'm still not sure I'm 100% past it. It's stylized, yes, but the style isn't perfected yet. Sometimes what we see is the result of style. Sometimes what we see is the result of a far too simple (lots of empty space) art that gives an unfinished look. I think some line weight variance would help this book a lot.
The story itself, bizarre at first, with it's penguin heavy focus, grew on me quickly. In fact, Landis had meon page 9, when Dr. Reese sings himself to sleep. His choice of lullabye? R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It". And he got the lyrics right! The story is fun, and Landis handles the bizarre without it seeming too silly.
The book is worth a look. The covers are gorgeous. The story is fun. The art has potential, but isn't quite there yet.
