Art by Mooney, Gustavson, Klein, Crandall and others !!
Special Notes: The company name of "Quality" was considered appropriate for the Golden Age publishing house spotlighted in this month's issue of Men of Mystery, as publisher Everett M. Arnold refused to hire anybody but the best & most polished artists in the business. Many of comicdom's most prestigious stars came to prominence drawing books for Quality, but some equally-talented individuals among this companies' illustrators are little-remembered today. Men of Mystery #78 showcases three of them. MANHUNTER artist Reed Crandall would be the best-known of the three, likely due to his involvement with the storied EC Comics line of the 1950's. By 1970, he was out of comics completely, and died a few years later. JESTER and QUICKSILVER illustrator Paul Gustavson was extremely prolific, and one of the early "art stars" of comics; drawing dozens of popular features not only for Quality, but at Timely, Centaur, Novelty Press, and a host of other publishers. Unfortunately, he died in the 1950's; long before organized comic fandom existed, hence has never been given his due. Penciler on The UNKNOWN, Bernie Klein was the most tragic of all- a friend, contemporary and peer of greats like Jerry Robinson, Mort Meskin & George Roussos in the earliest days of the comics, he died serving his country in World War II, without amassing a body of work large enough to show how talented he really was.
