Publisher Name: Dark Ocean Studios ( http://www.darkoceanstudios.com/main.html )
Writer: Jody Parker and Deidre Welch
Art: Yul Tolbert
35 pages, Color
Safety Content Label: A - Appropriate for age 9 and up.
Publishers Blurb:
Follow the stories of two girls who go on a series of misadventures. Meet all the crazy people they encounter in their day to day lives, and enjoy loads of laughs. Sarcastic and unexpected, "Paper People" is based loosely on real life events which have been exaggerated to protect the guilty.
In this issue: Jolie meets a compulsive liar named Fred and travels to Virginia to meet him. She wakes up after a carriage ride and everything seems strangely old fashioned. Will she realize she's being tricked and is really in historical Williamsburg? Will she keep falling for Fred's tricks? Will her friend Dee "accidentally" push Fred off a ledge sometime in the issue? Find out in this debut issue of "Paper People!"
Reviewer Comments:
Paper People, while not my usual cup of tea, is a rather cute little book. The first issue is an amusing read, with some clever moments. It's sort of sit-com, Archie, and indy-slice-of-life. Sort of.
The characters are charming, Dee being my favorite. What can I say, I'm partial to pragmatically pessimistic brunettes with little patience for B.S.. The juxtaposition between her and her perky, cheerful, naive blonde counterpart; Jolie, makes for that buddy-movie chemistry and helps make the book work.
Plus, it has the great exchange of:
JOLIE: I fell asleep halfway through "THE VILLAGE".
DEE: We all did.
Trust me, in context, that is laugh out loud funny!
Give it a look.
