Making Black history in comics

Being a white male in my 30's, even I notice that there is still a severe lack of prominent black characters in comics today.
Sure there's the obvious standouts in the genre like Luke Cage, Black Panther, John Stewart, and even Black Lightning and Vixen who are both hanging with the Justice League these days. But that's about where it ends in the mainstream.
Enter Zane Pinchback, an African-American journalist at the New Holland Herald living in New York City in the early 20th Century. His column, "Incognegro," delivers one scandalous expose after another on the unlawful lynchings down South and reveals the inner most secrets of the Klan and its' members. But how does a black man like Zane do it?
