No personality + way too many super powers + horrid writing + silly powers i.e speed reading + he has only two weaknesses + stupid alter ego = a horrible character.

Superman comics should be discontinued...i wouldnt wipe my ass with his comics.

Give me one reason why Superman is an interesting character?

The guy is worthless....
If you read him there is something seriously wrong with you.

Sigh...uneducated, ignorant superman bashing. Superman is more than just a comic character with superpowers. He is an pop culture icon, that is more recognizable than any other I'll wager. And now to argue the specifics.

No personality- by this i assume you mean he's no brooder like batman or maniac like wolverine, this "lack" of personality you complain about is in fact his most endearing trait, calm and controlled.

Too many superpowers- cmon really now, thats how he beats the bad guys, little boy.

Two weakness- personally I think its two too many, see above.

And as for wiping your rear end with the comic book, why would you wipe your ass with a comicbook anyways... ouch... paper cuts in the worst places... may I suggest you use your hand so it smells just like the crap coming out of your mouth.

P.S. I'm a Superman fanatic so don't take things too personally.

Jones does have a point. I always got a kick on how interesting Batman was in comparison. Bruce has so much going for him....then there's Clark. Gag...
While Clark seemed to just follow one set thought patterns for every dilemma Bruce always sought an alternative and sometimes out right surprised me with his tactics.

I have rarley been surprised by something Superman does. I usually have the 'Here we go again' reaction.

However, Clarks 'no personality' allows him to me reinvented for each generation. Maybe someone will get it right. :)

Hey guys I like Superman as well as the next guy, but he does have an awful lot of powers. Super Strength, speed, can fly and survive in space and all elements. Immune to most energies, and harm, ultra hearing, X-ray vision and probably a few more that I forgot. Basically he is the oober super hero. His only weakness is a green rock. If that is not overpowered then what is?

I liked Superman being all powerful. Bring me back the silver age Superman, somebody please.

Making him anything less than Super takes the super out of superman.

I like Superman but I can't read his ongoing comics that often... they don't interest me too much, but I like the character... I like him in small doses mostly... or as part of a team like in JLA comics or the massive DC crossovers like the multiple Crisis titles... still though, I think his best uses are teh small, yet awesome ones, like the ones in the Green Arrow series. My favortie two Superman scenes happen in GA comics.

1) When GA is outnumbered by mutated people and can't do anything to fight them, resulting in a last ditch effort of blowing up a car that does nothin but provoke more of the beasties, suddenly a blue blur comes from no where and then we see Superman has knocked out all of the beasts and tell Ollie he was just in town and thought he could use a hand... but the best part is what he says in jest before he leaves:

(Not Exact)
Clark: "Did you hear that?"
Ollie: "Hear What?"
Clark: "Two miles away, an old lady just tripped of a curb and broke her hip."
Ollie: "Are you serious?"
Clark: "No, but there is an earthquake in Argentina, see ya later."

2) The second one is more recent and is probably my favorite thing ever done with Superman. Connor has just been shot from god knows where, Mia and Dinah are freaking out because they're in the middle of the ocean, the radio isn't working, and the first aid kit won't be enough to help him, and then Ollie gets an idea. Amidst the commotion he says, "Clark." Nothing, more comotion, yelling back and forth between Mia and Dinah, Ollie says, it again, "Clark." Dinah comes over to help with the first aid kit and hears Ollie say something, as he had just said it again, "Clark." She asks what he said and he screams it, "CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!" We suddenly see Clark at the Daily Planet turning in surprise, and the very next page, Superman is to the rescue.

Granted he worked much as a Dues Ex Machina in both instances, but I think thats how he works best. He is so powerful that he can get kind of boring on his own, but it also makes him the greatest support character of all time... but thats all just my opinion.

but stale, better writing, greater villains on a power level equal or greater and you might have a winner. Supes needs cosmic adventures to really invigorate his character.

I've always enjoyed Superman as a character, and in fact got into comics because of John Byrne's Man Of Steel character revamp miniseries... those were my first comics.

But to be frank, I've never regularly collected any Superman series (excluding two recent examples I'll mention in a sec). Why? Because I think because he's been around so long, and is so powerful, most stories, other than retakes on his origin, stuff like that, are less exciting to me. It just seems like, what can an interesting take on Superman really be? Because the more basic/origin type stories are more interesting to me, I think he's actually been more successfully adapted in other mediums such as animation, television, prose novels (check out "It's Superman!") and film...

Recently, though, two books have hooked me...

All-Star Superman. Hands down one of the best superhero books to come out in a long time. For one, its chock full of silver-age goodness. Beyond that, though, this book (I have to refrain from acronyms with this one) has utilized the whole cast really well, and come up with interesting, yet fresh, stories about the Man of Steel, while tying them all together to a bigger picture. Clark's bumbling doofus persona is always highlighted by the fact that he's "inadvertently" saving people when he trips, stumbles, etc, Lex is just fantastic in is pure, unadulterated hate of Superman, and Lois is... well, I don't want to ruin the stories for anyone who hasn't read it yet. On top of it all, though, the stories are all very fun and have a "what if" kinda vibe to them, since this book is pretty much outside the framework of strict continuity.

Action Comics. I love the first Superman movie. So when when I heard Dick Donner and Geoff Johns were teaming up to write this book, I was excited. I turned out being a bit disappointed because there were tons of delays, etc, though I dug the stories when they did come out. THEN, Donner left Action, but Johns stayed on, and is currently in an incredible (and consistent) run with penciler Gary Frank. I'm not going to lie, this has become one book I look forward to every month! This probably validates a lot of peoples "against Superman" arguments because the current arc centers around the Legion of Superheroes, and takes place in the future, away from the regular Superman cast of characters. On top of that Superman has been without his powers. Regardless, it IS a Superman yarn, and it is has been excellent so far (made a LoSH fan out of me, for one).

What can you do to make Superman interesting? Send him to the future and take away his powers! It worked. One of the best things about this story is that Superman is in the situation he's in, yet his primary focus is to help the LoSH and save the world, rather than worrying about not having powers or how he's going to get back home. I also think, Johns, who, lets face it, has a good take on pretty much any DC hero he touches, has a good grasp on the Clark/Superman character, maintaining his "I'm Superman!" vibe, while still managing to inject humanity and vulnerability into the character. And Gary Frank's art... don't get me started. Love it. I hope he continues once this arc is over (I should look into that). Also, I love that he bases his Supes on Chris Reeves, and doesn't feel required to bulk him up a whole bunch... I mean, he's Superman, he doesn't NEED to be super huge to be powerful....

Anyway, those two books changed my opinion about the possibilities of the character, and I recommend them to anyone who has become jaded about Superman....

Oh and hi... I'm new here.
