Abin Sur

Geoff Johns, in all his glory, answered a good question I've never even pondered in GL#30 (secret origins pt. 2):

What the hell was Abin Sur doing in a spaceship in the first place, if he's got a dang ring?

That is weird, I've never thought of that either. I think too that it's strange that he died when he began to fear that his ring would fail him. Who was the dude that escaped the ship before it crashed though? I mean I realize he was an alien from the race who predicted the "blackest night" prophecy but does he play some more important role?

I don't have the issue handy, but I think i remember Abin saying something when he escaped the ship about "you'll burn up before you get away" and I figured he did... that he was a throwaway character, but then again i did almost whip out my Green Lantern Secret Files and try and look the guy up (but i was lazy)...

But really though, I don't know how many times/variations i've read Hal's origin story and NEVER thought twice about Abin Sur being in a friggin space ship!!!

Geez-- leave it to Geoff Johns to fix stuff all the way back to 1959!

I have to hand it to Geoff, though.... as far as retcons go (not saying this one in particular, it was more of a tidying up) he does a pretty good job at taking a lot of a obscure and convoluted continuity from over decades, and makes you think the whole thing was planned.
