Reviewer Comments:
Indie anthology books are like a compilation album by a bunch of indie bands. You’re not going to get that super polish of the big corporate entities, but you do get a raw edge that you can’t really find anywhere else. Sometimes it really works, and sometimes it doesn’t pan out. That’s the fun of indie art.

This issue contains stories with a soldier who’s lost his way, one of the sexiest flesh-eaters you’ll ever see, and a clever tale about a Cadillac driving zombie-killer. Two of the stories make interesting use of grayscale coloring, while “Rising Tides” uses solid black and white (similar to Sin City). Every once in a while the reader may notice a panel that is a little confusing, but overall it’s amazing to see how much can be conveyed without using any additional colors.

My favorite story this time around has to be “Roadtrip to the End of the World.” Writer Adam Wilson made clever use of the short story format and delivered a punchy ending to a fun story. It can be rather difficult to give a full sense of resolution to such a short tale, but Wilson nailed it.

For any other indie creators interested in making your own comic book, please take a lesson from the Grim Crew. Their issues are available online as a downloadable PDF for less than a dollar each (DriveThruComics.com). In order to check out their work, you don’t have to buy a paper book and pay for shipping (although you can if you want to). I am pretty reluctant to pay a book price and shipping for an issue that I know nothing about, but I can handle a buck for a download. If I like it, then I’ll buy the trade or whatever, but bravo to the marketing guys at Grim Crew for making their work accessible.

So, you’ve got no excuse not to check out this series.
