Publishers Blurb: Ex Occultus: Badge of Langavat (one-shot) Created by: Robert James Russell Story by: Robert James Russell, Jesse Young Artist: Sandra Lanz Colorist: Tim McDonley Written By: Robert James Russell 1864, Scotland. Francis Wakefield and fellow occult hunter Fergus Duff find themselves investigating the disappearance of children from nearby villages. Their hunt leads them to a forgotten castle belonging to a family of undead, cursed werewolves who have nefarious plans for the taken. Reviewer Comments: A horror/adventure story set in Scotland during the late 1800s, EX OCCULTUS: BADGE OF LANGVAT is a well put together little book. Writers Robert James Russel and Jesse Young have obviously done their homework into the occult, werewolves, and Scotland of the time period. The result is an entertaining tale that reads like something that could have been passed down through the generations in some quaint Scottish village. When a village's children are kidnapped by 'wolves that walk like men', the hunt is on, and it's a race against time to save the children and destroy the beasts. I found this book particularly enjoyable, as it succeeds at doing everything we here at PFB have been discussing about horror comics and werewolves in particular in Stephen Forbes' BOLTS & NUTS column. I love when things come together like that. Sandra Lanz's artwork is wonderful. Her faces and attention to details really help bring the book to life. Some of the panels are a bit stiff, but it works here, with Tim McDonaley's grey tones, to give it that Universal Pictures old Monster Movie feel. Combine that with the writing and you've got a new book that feels classic. Worth the money and the look, EX OCCULTUS: BADGE OF LANGVAT is a rather enjoyable comic. |
